On June 30, 2013, the inconceivable hit the fire service family. 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots died while battling the Yarnell Fire. Today marks the 10th anniversary of that tragic event. On June 28, 2013, a lightning strike ignited a fire on a steep mountain ridge west of the town of Yarnell, AZ. The Granite Mountain Hotshots responded and worked to contain the fire. On June 30, as these firefighters were in the process of moving to another location, the wind shifted, causing the fire to block all their escape routes. The loss of these 19 heroes was devastating not only to the Yarnell community but to the entire state of Arizona.
CGFD will always honor their service and sacrifice. Today we remember them by name. Gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN.
